it is referring to the version of JoomGallery in Joomla! 1.5.

Since you say you have version 1.5.7.5 there shouldn't be any problem.
I just tested this on my installation also.

Could you please have a look at file '<path you have entered at the migration check>/administrator/components/com_joomgallery/joomgallery.xml'?
Which version is stated there?

Most probably that was achieved together with your template because it was never a functionality of JoomGallery.
So, it would be necessary to have a look at that old site.

You cannot fill the space in all directions without distorting the image. How should this be possible (or rather what do you expect JoomGallery to do)?

you have to use the migration script. Doing it by hand is only possible if you simply recreate all categories and reupload the images in the new gallery.
