Upload Error "Cannot Use String Offset as an Array"

I am having people tell me that they cannot add photos, and I have not been able to replicate their situation. The error message they are receiving is as follows: "Fatal error: Cannot use string offset as an array in /home/content/16/3476916/html/community/administrator/components/com_joomgallery/helpers/upload.php on line 216"

In another post, this error message is quoted, but in that post it is stated that it is caused by the file size exceeding the upload limit. I have tried to upload files that are too large in order to force this error, and instead I get an orderly error message explaining that I have exceeded the file upload size limit. So this does not seem to be the problem.

I would appreciate any help or advice that I can get determining what is causing this error. Thanks in advance!
