I remember in the older PonyGallery, we were able to change the CSS settings from the backend admin area. Unless I'm missing it, I don't see such a configuration page.  Assuming this feature was removed, I went into the joomsettings css file and found this written at the top:

CSS Styles generated by settings in the Joomgallery backend.
DO NOT EDIT - this file will be overwritten every time the config is saved.
Adjust your styles in joom_local.css instead.

So now I'm confused - are we supposed to edit the CSS directly in this file? Or is there some configuration page I cannot find in the backend? I am using the latest version of JoomGallery and Joomla.

Under Features, it says "The CSS based layout can be modified in the backend."  so now I really feel like I'm going nuts because I don't see where I can modify colors and everything that I remember in Pony...

You could just do as being told in the comment of joom_settings.css: In the same folder there is a file joom_local.css.README. If you rename it to joom_local.css you can adjust any CSS style in JoomGallery you want, and it won't be overwritten by updates.

We dropped the simple color and border settings (which could always only cover a small fraction of all the things users would want to adjust) in favour of a full CSS customization.

The feature did not make it into the Beta 1 in time, but is already available in SVN. It should be in one of the next builds.
