Until now there are no problems with php7 known.
If you have problems, it would be nice if you report here.

When running PHP 7, category views break when there are sub-categories. It produces an http 500 error, which resolves itself immediately when the PHP version is reverted to 5.6.  The sub-category views work.

Hi,

which php-Version do you use exactly?
An error 500 is triggered by the server. You need to look into the log files or ask your host what caused the error.

I am running PHP 7.0.16.

I managed to figure out that the internal server error 500 was triggered by this setting in the JG configuration: Category View>>Sub-Categories>>Number of Columns for Sub-Categories. I had it set to zero in order to hide sub-category links in the category view. By changing this value to "-1" I solved the issue and am able to run on PHP 7 while still hiding the sub-categories.

I find that displaying the sub-categories causes the category view to be cluttered. Is there a way of moving the sub-category links to the bottom of the page and displaying them in a more compact way? Would be a "nice to have".

Setting this value to 0 is not a good idea.  Grin
If you want to disable the whole subcategories you can make a simple template override of the file components/com_joomgallery/views/category/tmpl/default.php or default_subcategories.php.
